That Awkwardness

Yesterday I set aside some time to work on some drawings.

I’d had these images floating around in my head. More than images, they were ideas, the essences of the images.

(Well, it makes perfect sense to my brain, anyway.)

I was excited to finally be able to let these idea-images out onto paper.

Pausing [...]

One Tiny Change

I’m writing this post from my new, top-secret writing location. And today, within this top-secret writing location I’m sitting in an even more secret hiding place.

I’ve come here before, several times in fact. And I’ve always sat in the same area.

Yesterday, I realized that I was annoyed and uncomfortable and so [...]

On A Year of Playing. Artfully.

Well, Artful Play has been around for one whole year: today is my blog’s birthday.

So that’s why I’ve had this insane craving for cupcakes all week.

What I’ve learned from this year of blogging

Oh, way more than can be included in one little post. But I do want to share few things [...]

Greetings from Artful Play HQ

Today I spent the day working behind the scenes on things related to Artful Play.

I messed around with its organization, systems and structure.

All these things sound very boring. Which is why I had to employ a plethora of brightly colored folders, crayons, stamps, and post-its, all of which worked remarkably well.

(I [...]

You Can Call Me a “Productivity Guru” Now

I conducted a little experiment yesterday. But first, some background:

This week has mainly been about taking care of a number of things I had been putting off, and a few, more recent (and urgent) things. Since I live in Italy, most of these things involved getting certificates with official-looking stamps on them. That, [...]

When You Forget to Eat

When I’m working on a project, I always take it as a good sign if I forget to feed myself. If I’ve lost track of time so much that the only reminder of time’s passing is my grumbling stomach, I know I’m going in the right direction. Surely, if I’m enjoying the process that [...]

Do It First.

What does your morning routine look like?

I’ll tell you what mine used to be.

I would stumble from my bed and the first thing I’d do was turn on the computer. Then, as it booted, I’d fix myself a tea or coffee. I’d sit down and immediately check my email while getting my [...]

Creative Obstacle? Eh.

My workspace is one of these. I often get a little resentful about it because I’d like to have a real studio with, you know, a door instead.

But I’ve given a lot of thought to space recently, in part because I’m writing a wee ebook on some of the issues and obstacles that [...]

From 43 to 41

(Disclaimer: Maybe it’s the time of year, but I’m feeling a bit ramble-y these days. You’ve been warned!)

It’s August. And August, around here, is synonymous with vacation.

For some people, August began back in June. This is the case of one of my students, who is 18. As soon as school was [...]

Dolce Far Niente

I’ve been living in Italy for over 9 years now but there is one very beloved Italian practice that I can’t quite seem to get the hang of: dolce far niente.

The literal translation is “sweet doing nothing” but maybe the best translation is “sweet idleness.”

I used to be able to do this. [...]
