That Awkwardness

Yesterday I set aside some time to work on some drawings.

I’d had these images floating around in my head. More than images, they were ideas, the essences of the images.

(Well, it makes perfect sense to my brain, anyway.)

I was excited to finally be able to let these idea-images out onto paper.

Pausing [...]

Six Painting Monsters

Here’s a little story about using logic to outwit the monsters*.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with monsters, here’s a brief introduction: they are the parts of you that get really scared or even outraged whenever you try to do something a bit more daring. That something could be working [...]

On A Year of Playing. Artfully.

Well, Artful Play has been around for one whole year: today is my blog’s birthday.

So that’s why I’ve had this insane craving for cupcakes all week.

What I’ve learned from this year of blogging

Oh, way more than can be included in one little post. But I do want to share few things [...]

To Create is to Resist

The television was on as we were eating dinner last night, which is the normal state of things here at Artful Play HQ (unfortunately). I usually tune out, I admit, unless there’s something good on.

Last night, I was distracted. We had been watching a talk show, of the sort where various intellectuals, politicians [...]

Reading Closely

The other day as I was writing the post about drawing the cell phone charm I realized something: drawing and translation have more in common than I had thought.

It was a somewhat upsetting realization, because one of these two things is my day job and the other is the thing I wish I [...]

On Having a Clean House

It only seems fitting to post this the day after a holiday called L’Immacolata in Italy.

I’ve written about housecleaning before, specifically the kind you use as an excuse not to do the thing.

There’s another kind, too. It’s the housecleaning you do when you come to a spot in your work where you [...]

Something That Nobody Has to See

Oh, how I wish I could post a picture of what I’m working on right now.

But that won’t be possible. Because not showing you what I’m doing is the whole point of my current experiment.

I asked myself what I’d paint if nobody had to see it. I’ve asked clients this question before, [...]

Doing Things Imperfectly

… is one of the hardest things to do. OK, scratch that. Doing things imperfectly without beating yourself up for it is one of the hardest things to do.

I haven’t done any serious oil painting in about a year. And yet, when I sit down to paint something, I immediately want a masterpiece. [...]

When You Forget to Eat

When I’m working on a project, I always take it as a good sign if I forget to feed myself. If I’ve lost track of time so much that the only reminder of time’s passing is my grumbling stomach, I know I’m going in the right direction. Surely, if I’m enjoying the process that [...]

A Creative Nudge for November

For some reason, November has become the month to work on creative projects. I don’t know why this is, but I’m not complaining.

If you’re itching to get some progress made on your project, why not set some creative goals for this upcoming month? There are loads of ways to give yourself some structure [...]
