I took another break from blogging this past week in order to deal with some more fun bureaucratic tomfoolery. Because around here, taxes don’t take a day, but a week to file. Or two. And this brings me to my story. Or stories, I should say. Here, a lot of your filing and enthusiastic [...] I bet a lot of us would like to get to the bottom of creativity: why is it that some days we feel inspired, and other days we can’t be bothered? Why is it sometimes so hard to get down to the creative work when we have set aside the time for it? And [...] I’ve been living in Italy for over 9 years now but there is one very beloved Italian practice that I can’t quite seem to get the hang of: dolce far niente. The literal translation is “sweet doing nothing” but maybe the best translation is “sweet idleness.” I used to be able to do this. [...] Lately I’ve really been craving some color. Maybe it’s all the graphite and ink drawings I’d been doing. Or maybe it’s the sudden abundance of summery fruit around here. Anyway, today while I was working we had yet another crazy thunderstorm. Our electric system can be a little tricky so I have to work [...] It has been a shockingly long time since I last posted. Shocking, when you consider that I’m meant to be documenting my almost-daily creative practice. On the other hand, over the course of this time away from my little blog, I realized that I had been inadvertently taking my own advice. How did that [...] This is sort of cheating, because it’s not really me being creative. But it’s so creative that I felt as if I had to share it with you all. My contribution can be the photographs and the translation. Yesterday I was out walking and came upon this sad spectacle: Aw, poor bike. This [...] I must confess, I’ve got a bit of a problem when it comes to a little thing called practicing what you preach. I started out this blog saying I’d dedicate 5 minutes a day – almost every day – to some kind of creative practice. For me, that’s usually drawing or painting or writing, [...] You know what’s great about creativity? It never acts like that crazymaking, high-maintenance lover. You know the one. Your creativity isn’t like that. It will always forgive you. Let’s say you’ve been gone for a while. Maybe you haven’t called in a few hours, a few days, a few weeks, months, or even years.
